Handmade Holiday 2016 ~ Day #1

Hi everyone!

Welcome to day #1 of Handmade Holiday 2016. This can be such a busy and hectic time of year but I still enjoy giving something handmade and adding handmade touches to gifts for family and friends. Each day this week, I’ll share a quick Handmade Holiday idea for packaging, tags, gift card holders, recipes, treat holders and more that will be sure to add that special handmade touch!

Day #1 ~ Hot Chocolate Packet Holder

These hot chocolate packet holders are quick and easy to make. They would be a nice gift for a teacher, for a child to give classmates at Christmas or even tucked into a stocking or gift basket. Each holds a packet of hot chocolate and a candy cane. *Please note: one 8 1/2″ x 11″ sheet of card stock makes two holders. This project is also great way to use up scraps of patterned paper.

You will need: card stock sheets and scraps, patterned paper, scoring board, bone folder, paper trimmer or cutting tool of choice, pencil, stamp, ink, adhesive, yarn or ribbon, hole punch, hot chocolate packet, candy cane.

Cut card stock to 5 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ {there are now two half sheets of card stock which will make two holders}. Score at 4 1/4″. Then score on the diagonal. To do the diagonal score, make a tick mark on the top of the card stock at 2 3/4″ in from the right and another mark 2 3/4″ down on the right. Then line up both tick marks on the same groove line on the scoring board and score. Erase tick marks.

Fold both score lines with the bone folder.

Punch 2 holes through both the front and back layer to thread the yarn through. I measured up from the bottom 2″ and 2 1/2″ for the holes.

Add some adhesive along the bottom edge and fold the holder closed. There is no need for adhesive on the folded corner piece as it stays put when the card stock is folded on the center line. But if you want, you can add a tiny bit.

Cut a strip of patterned paper 1 1/4″ x 4 1/4″ for along the bottom of the front. Stamp the chosen image on a scrap of card stock, adhere to the front and embellish however you wish. I matted my stamped image and added some glitter to the tiny stamped snowflakes.

Cut a piece of yarn about 14″ long. Thread the yarn through from front to back leaving about a 5″ tail in the front.

Take the yarn from the back and bring it around to the front and insert the end in the top hole. This makes the side loop to hold the candy cane.

Insert the candy cane into the loop, tie into a bow and trim the excess. All that’s left to do is add the hot chocolate packet and it’s ready.

I packaged mine in cello bags tied with matching yarns.
