Fancy Fold Friday #13

Happy Friday everyone!

Fancy Fold Friday posts are posted on the first Friday of each month and are about making a wide variety of card styles just by varying the way that the paper is folded. Knowing how to fold cards from a single sheet of cardstock is a useful technique to learn. Many different styles of handmade cards can be created from standard sizes of paper and card stock ~ typically 8 1/2″ x 11″ {letter size}. The various methods of card folding each provide different design opportunities. Very unique looks can be achieved simply by changing the fold or orientation of your card and special folds are a great way to create eye catching cards!

This week: CASCADE FOLD.

This is a simple card fold that makes good use of coordinating patterned paper for decorating. Since Father’s Day is coming up in a couple of weeks, that is the theme of this card design.

You will need {to make the card base}: card stock, scoring board, bone folder, paper trimmer or cutting tools of choice, ruler, pencil, eraser. *Additional supplies may include card stock/patterned paper and whatever embellishments/extras need to complete the intended design.

Cut one piece of card stock to measure 6″ x 12″.

Starting at the left hand side with the card stock longways on the scoring board, score at 2″, 4″, 8″ and 10″.

Fold on the score lines as follows: mountain, valley, valley, mountain. Crease the folds with the bone folder.

Measure and make a pencil mark 2″ down from the top left corner of the card base. Draw a line from the pencil mark to the top of the 4″ score line. On the right side measure and make a pencil mark 2″ down from the top right corner of the card base. Draw a line from the pencil mark to the top of the 8″ score line.

Using your cutting tool of choice, cut along the lines. ∗Please note: save the cut off triangles to use as templates for the patterned paper pieces.

Fold the card base and crease each fold again. Now it’s time to decorate!

From the patterned paper cut:

*A piece that measures 5 3/4″x 3 3/4″. This is for the large inside space that you see when the card opens.

*4 pieces that measure 1 3/4″ wide by 6″ long. Now is when the cut off triangles are helpful for getting the correct angles when you cut them to the correct length. Lay the patterned paper on the flaps so that there is equal space on the left/right/bottom. ∗Please note: refer to the very first picture of the completed card to see what I mean. Lay the cut off triangles on the patterned paper at the top and trace along the angled line to mark for cutting. If they are still to long after cutting, you can always trim a bit more off.

I used patterned paper only on the areas that can be seen when the card is folded. You can add some to the other 2 inside panels if you want to. A blank piece of card stock was added for a hand written message.

I stamped the sentiment and heat embossed it before using a die cut to cut it out. Then matted it onto a larger layer of card stock that matches the card base before adhering it to the left side. ∗Please note: only adhere to one front side or the card won’t open. A few enamel shapes and it’s all finished. What do you think? More embellishments could be added and it would look awesome! 🙂

I hope you enjoyed this months Fancy Fold!
